Day thirty-nine: December 4th Final Day

This week I did not receive new projects because it was my last week at the office. I organized all files and delivered my completed requests to Mr. Roger. All my works were organized and saved in my portable hard drive; also I cleaned my desk and left all stuffs in order. The weather was unusual this day; at 10:00 am started to snow so Mr. Conway told us that we would leave the office at noon. At 11:30 am the snowing was much strong. Finally, I said good-bye and thank the office’s people and left the office at noon.

Day thirty-eight: December 3rd T-Shirt logo

I continued organizing my works and thinking about my final presentation. Mr. David asked me if I could help him with a project, of course I said yes. It was a logo for a T-shirt; he already had the design for the backside and he wanted the logo’s design for the front side. I draw in illustrator a piece of pie that was the content of the cartoon in the backside; then I placed the HCC logo and the text below the logo. Mr. David told me that it was good and he sent the proof for revision. Next, he received the changes; take off the pie draw and changes the font of the phrase were the instructions. I did it and sent the proof. Then I went back arranging my works.

Day thirty-seven: December 1st Flyer’s changes

I received an email with changes in the flyer that I had been working last week. Some corrections in the text and to replace a photo were the tasks for this project; then I sent the new proof for revision. Then, other project was approved so I prepared the press quality PDF and sent it for the client. I spent the rest of my workday organizing the works that I did during my internship.

Day thirty-six: November 24th A busy day

After a calm week and with Mr. Roger returning to the office, today become a busy day. Two new projects were on my desk; some projects were in stand by waiting for approval; a couple of projects approved needed to send the press quality PDF; and my HCC email did not allow me send emails, it was full. Those were some challenges to overcome this day.

First, I tried to fix my email because I needed to send the press quality PDF for the approval projects. I deleted old mails and the bigger one too but it still did not work; also I had important emails that I wanted to keep with me. The HCC email does not have many options to work and the space is very reduced; after many attempts I have not succeeded in copying some important emails but I could achieve more space to work.

I sent the PDF files and started to work in the new projects. Then I sent the proof for revision and left the office until next week. Happy Thanksgiving!

Day thirty-five: November 20th Banner

Mr. David received the banner’s information so I started to work on it. It was simple and he showed me a sample. I laid out the logo and text and placed some lines on the background and then I sent by email a proof to Mr. David; then, he told me that in this occasion the banner would have only two colors and I should make some change in the text. After the corrections he check the proof and approved it.

Next, I check my email and I had some changes in the ad; I made the changes and sent the new proof.

Day thirty-four: November 19th ATC ad, a banner and a flyer

I received an ad to make some change; it was in black and white. The photo, text and sample were in the CD that Mr. David gave me so I worked on it. Then after I finished it, I sent the PDF’s proof for revision.

Next, Mr. David told me about a banner; he explained me its features but the information was uncompleted and he did not can communicate with the person in charge so it was in stand by.

Finally, He gave me other project; it was a flyer, which needed some changes in the text. I started searching in the backup disk for the file and when I found it I made a new file with the changes and links. Then I sent the proof.

Day thirty-three: November 17th Calm day

Today was a very calm day and there was not significant movement in the office. Mr. Roger will be out of the office all the week because some relative had died therefore Mr. David took the task to manage the new projects. Generally, all projects are emailed to Mr. Roger and I don’t know if any other people could check the new projects in lieu of he.

I worked on the brochure’s cover making some changes and fixing errors. The last time that I had done the cover, I was not really happy with the result something was uncompleted. I add the arrows that the sample showed achieving a better result and then I sent the proof for revision. Next, I check my email and the cosmetology's brochure had been approved so I sent the quality press PDF to the printing shop.

Day thirty-two: November 13th Finishing the brochure

The ad was approved so I sent the quality press PDF. The day before I almost finished to layout the brochure’s text and placed the photos but as I worked with the brochure’s template (the sample was in letter size) I had many white space. I worked on arranging the text and then to search photos for placing in the free space. After that I worked on the cover; Mr. Roger told me he will work on it but this day he did not come to the office so I worked on it. At the end of my workday I was done the brochure but I need Mr. Roger’s checking to send it.

Day thirty-one: November 12th Continuing with the brochure and an ad

The flyer was approved so I sent the quality press PDF. The cosmetology brochure, which I worked days before needed a photo change and an ad came as a new project. It was simple; a text and photo made up it. I laid out the text and started searching for the photo; I also seized to search the cosmetology photo. When I done Mr. Roger made some corrections and showed me samples of the last ads that the department was done. I arranged my design to the sample and changed the photo; Mr. Roger gave the final touch and I sent it for revision. Then, I continued working on the brochure.

Day thirty: November 10th Flyer and Brochure

I began my workday with two projects: a flyer and brochure. I started with the flyer that was very simple because she sent an approximate sample of her requirement. I worked on it and sent the proof for revision. Then I started with the brochure; it looks complicated because he sent a sample with photos, which would be respected. Mr. Roger called the person and explained the pattern the department has to design the artwork but he insisted on the sample that he sent. Finally, I had to work with the brochure’s template and arrange the sample into it.

Day twenty-nine: November 6th Day of corrections and changes

My first step was finishing the poster that I worked the day before and sent it for revision. Then, I received an email from the brochure people; he wanted to include HCC police logo into the brochure. At the same time, Saki’s two flyers were approved so I sent the press quality pdf.

Susie spoke with Mr. Roger for changes in the banner and poster photos and the people from the poster did not like to include a photo so I sent a new proof.

Finally, the poster was approved and my day of corrections and changes ended.

Day twenty-eight: November 5th Many changes and new poster

My internship’s classmate Saki had to travel to Japan for personal reasons so I had to assume her job. First, some corrections in two flyers that she was sent for revision. Next, I received an email from the brochure people for some changes; and Susie made another changes in the banner and poster.

A very simple poster was my next project; it was simple because only had a logo and a headline. I tried to achieve some artistic effect with the letters for a better presentation but I could not; Mr. Roger agreed to place a photo into the poster.

Day twenty-seven: November 3rd Changes and new brochure

One more time Susie made changes in the banner and poster. She wanted very big texts and reducing the size’s photos for the banner; also she wanted to replace the group of photos that I made for only one photo in hte poster. The changes that she wanted do not work with the concepts of balance and proportion in design but as Mr. Roger said “She is the client.”

A brochure was my new project; it was related with domestic violence. The text that the HCC police department sent me was laid out in a flyer. My work was arranging it into the brochure. After I done the layout I started to search photos at Juipter; I found a very dramatic photo for the cover and other for the text. Mr. Roger checked it and made some observations that I fixed.

Day twenty-six: October 30th Two flyers

I received two new projects they were re-designing a flyers. I would use the same text with same changes and new photos. My first step was looking for photos at Juipter; then I laid out he text and the photos; and finally I made some changes on the background.

After I chose the photos I worked they in Photoshop. In one of the photos I made a mask and deleted the background got it transparence but when I placed it in In Design the background become white so I asked Mr. Roger. He told me that in this case I had to work the file in Photoshop format and placing it in In Design as a Photoshop and not as I did in Tiff format. Everyday I learn something new.

I sent the proofs for revision.

Day twenty-five: October 29th New changes in the Banner and new Poster

Mr. Roger gave me the name of the file where I had to search new photos for the banner (one more time). I began to choose the new photos and then I placed they in my banner’s layout. Then Mr. Roger told me that using the same layout I would work the poster. I opened a new document with the poster dimension and placed the text and photos from the banner. I had to add some more photos and a text so I searched the same file for more photos. When I finished Mr. Roger checked the banner and poster and told me to sent the proofs so I did it.

Day twenty-four: October 27th Changes and new brochure

I received by email some changes about the last week brochures. One of they only needed changing the type from regular to bold and delete some information. The other brochure also needed changing in the text and the background color. After the changes I sent the proof for revision.

A new brochure was my next project. It was about cosmetology program so I started to search photos at Juipter. Then I laid out the text on my template and tabulated the chart about the classes. Finally I placed the photos and the color background; Mr. Roger checked it and I sent the proof.

One of the brochures that I sent with the last changes was approved so Mr. Roger explained me the process to send the quality press pdf to the printing shop.

Day twenty-three: October 23rd Two brochures

I came very early this morning to finish my work. The brochure only needs some final touch. After Mr. Roger’s revision I sent the proof for revision. He told me that he had two new jobs for me so I was ready to continue working. There were two brochures for different departments; the most urgent was the fashion design’s brochure. I opened my template and placed the text. I was surprised when the text took to much space so I went to ask Mr. Roger. I was thinking in delete some text but he told me that it was incorrect. He took place at my computer and started to work with the text and at the same time he explained me what he was doing. The text was ready; the next step was to place the photos. The photo for cover was already defined; I placed two more photos because the limited space left by the text. I worked the inside of the brochure with a color background, a photo, and transparency effect behind the text. Mr. Roger explained me that to work in this way the text looks discontinuous so he enlarged the photo and deleted the background to achieve continuity.

I started the other brochure; it was a bi-fold. They only sent the text so I began to search for images at Juipter. When I had the text and photos laid out, I called Mr. Roger to check it. He suggested me a couple of corrections so I fixed they and then I sent the proof.

Day twenty-two: October 22nd Brochure

I continued working in the advertisement; it was in black and white. I worked the colors’ photos in Photoshop to convert they to Black and White. Then I started to lay out the text with the photos and when I finished Mr. Roger checked the flyer and ad. There were not any changes so I sent the pdf for revision.

New project came to me; it was a brochure for the veterinary paramedic program. They sent an old printed brochure with its In Design file and some photos. I started to work with the new Brochure template that has different measures and layout. So I changed the cover and the interior photos to achieve a new appearance; the text was the same but using different font and size. I almost finished the layout but I had to go.

Day twenty-one: October 20th Banner changes, Flyer and Advertisement

My day began sending the press quality pdf by the advertisement for the Hispanic magazine that was approved. Then I worked in new changes in the banner; fix the text and changing one photo. I decided to make two samples and sent they for revision.

Two new projects arrived to my desk, a flyer and an advertisement. They sent the text and some photos for both works. I started with the flyer; it was in color and they sent the before flyer as an example so I began to work on it. First, I worked with the photos in Photoshop; then, I laid out the text with the photos; and finally, I added some drop shadows to the photos and also placed the color background. I began to place the text for the advertisement but the time to leave came.

Day twenty: October 16th Flyer

Miss Yolonde explained me about a flyer. She had a proof with some indications or changes that the people wanted in the flyer. The content of the flyer was about the chancellor’s party which they wanted to represent Hispanic, Afro-American, Asian, and American cultures. My task was searching for images that represent each culture. In the indications, they had chosen some examples but in my opinion there was not relation between they.

My first layout was to create a background with decorative motif of each culture but Mr. Roger told me that with the text over the background it would be lost. He suggested me something simpler in each corner of the paper and the text in the center. I worked on it and finally I placed four representative images and Christmas wallpaper as a background with a white paper for the text.

Day nineteen: October 15th Advertisement

A new project came to my hands. It was designing an advertisement for a Hispanic magazine. My first step was to find an appropriate photo. In the before edition the photo was about a young male and for the current it will change to a Hispanic business female. I started my search on Juipter, a website of stock photos which the department is subscribed. I like to surf in this web because I can find diverse kinds of photos; generally, I download four or five alternatives for one job.

My second step was to place the photo and layout the text. Because the ad was simple I decided to layout three different examples about the same advertisement. Mr. Roger checked all and suggested me that the last was the better so I sent the proof for revision.

Day eighteen: October 13th New Web photos

Today I had the task to place fourteen photos for renovation the HCC web head. First, I worked the photos in Photoshop; some of they needed adjusting the bright and contrast. Second, Donald gave me a template that had the dimensions in pixels and a color bar with a text. I had to think over the bar at the moment to place the photo but when I finish to place the photo I had to delete it. The job was easy and Donald was pleased with the result.

Day seventeen: October 9th Modifications

I received three emails about the T-Shirt design. In conclusion, she was looking for more ideas. The image of the TV with the hands was pleasing for she but the text font and the layout needed a new arrangement. I began to work on it; I started searching other fonts and then trying to achieve some effects on the text. I made three different T-Shirt designs and sent these for revision.

Day sixteen: October 8th T-Shirt design

A new project was on my desk when I arrived to the office. It was to design an advertisement for a conference on a T-Shirt. The text was defined for the front and back of the T-Shirt; my work will consist in layout it and create an image that represent the content of the advertisement. First I started to search for some T-Shirt templates at Internet, then I placed the text on the template, and finally I began to drafts some ideas about the content. The main word was “sharing” so I was looking for something that represents or defines this word and the second word was “TV” the conference topic. I drew a TV with two hands trying to represent both words and then I placed it on the text layout. I received some suggestions about my hands' draw; they were not very easy to see so I fixed it drawing a different kind of hands. I sent the proof for revision.

Day fifteen: October 6th Calm day

Donald finally redesigned my web project. He only used my headline worked in Photoshop and deleted the photo. The design looked very simple so it was that they wanted.

Today was a very calm day; there was not a new project. I received an email approving the flyer that I did last week. I only had to send back the flyer in jpeg and pdf formats.

The rest of my workday I made good use of time to put in order my computer, filing photos, arranging my desktop, and continuing with the tutorials.

Day fourteen: October 2nd Job for the Web

I started a new project, the design of a headline for the HCC Web page. The design was simple: the logo, text and a photo; also the colors had already defined. I began searching the photo. I had to do three examples so I was looking for three different photos. I found they and placed each one in the examples. I worked the text with some effects in Photoshop to achieve something different. To work for web is different in the resolution and the color mode for the rest is very similar. When I finished, Mr. Roger called Donald, the person in charge of Web page in the department, to check the job and give an opinion. He suggested me to find a photo with real people of HCC. I found some pictures in the HCC stock photos but they were not really appropriates. I chose one and worked it in Photoshop. I finished the job and it was waiting for revision.

Day thirteen: October 1st New changes in the banner

I received new changes in the banner that I had worked the last week. Mr. Roger showed me a draft with the new changes in the banner. I began to search new photos for the banner. When I found the photos I started to layout the banner with the new instructions. After I finished, Mr. Roger checked it and made some corrections. Then I sent the proof and followed with the flyer, which I was working on Tuesday. The flyer was almost ready. The text was distributed and the photo was placed; it only needed some adjustments in the background. Mr. Roger checked the flyer and I sent the proof for revision.

Day twelve: September 29th An ad

There was a new project for me, redesign an ad. The people who required the ad sent careful and detailed instructions in the pdf file. The ad needed to be resized, ad some texts, and layout properly. After I finished to made all the text adds and changed the photo and background size I sent the proof. In a few minutes, she sent the revised proof with some changes. I fixed all the changes and sent back other proof. Finally, she approved the ad and Mr. Roger explained me how to send a pdf press quality to the request’s person and the way to save the work in two kinds of files.

Another project arrived. It was a flyer design for firearms classes. I had the text, size, and the format that they required. The flyer is going to be spread by Electronic media. I started with the text layout and then I began to search the photo. Time to leave.

Day eleven: September 25th Cover design

I continued looking for ideas at the Internet and also I started with some drafts. I began to draw in illustrator some shapely forms, then I filled it with gradient color and finally the background was beginning to take form. The next step was to search adequate photos. At the end of my workday I had finished the layout. Mr. David said me that this was a good start for a project.

Day ten: September 24th Fix the banner and Schedule cover

I received an email from the banner’s person with a specific change; she did not like the photo that I chose. My search for new photos began again. She wanted two photos instead one. I selected few possible options and started to layout they in my new design. Mr. Roger advised me some changes in the photos that I had chosen; one of they had an old computer. Finally, I found two photos. I think, they were not the best but I had revised all the photos stock and did not find something better. I sent for revision the new banner design.

I began a new project with Mr. David; it was the cover design for a Spring 2010 Schedule of classes. He explained me the requirements and suggested to search for ideas of design at the Internet. I found many excellent designs that adjust for my job. Time to leave.

Day nine: September 22nd A Banner

The flow of work in the office was slow. I arrived in the morning and there was not new jobs or changes on the before works so I began again with the tutorials. Mr. Roger came with a new job, a banner. Apparently very simply to do, two lines of text, a photo, and the HCC’s logo. The most difficult part to do was to find an adequate photo. The HCC stockphotos are not updated and it is not very well organized. To find a photo took me much time that I thought. Finally, I finished the design and sent it to the request’s people.

Day Eight: September 18th More photos and an ad

Today was a calm day until forty minutes before one o’clock, my leaving hour. In the morning I received other group of photos for place into Flickr. I followed the same way that the day before and also I discovered some tricks to add, delete and arrange these photos in the process. By sixty-one photos only two of them needed some fix in Photoshop. My day was almost ending until Mr. Roger came with a new project. It was an ad made a few days before that needs some changes and the most important I have to finish it right now. The task was easy but there were some details in the email very ambiguous so Mr. Roger had to call the people in charge to clarify the doubts. After that and with the supervision of Mr. Roger I finished the work.

Day Seven: September 17th Place photos

During the first day of my internship Mr. Conway told me about the HCC gallery of photos that they are building into Flickr’s web site and today I received the first group of photos to place on it. The process is very simple however there are some details to pay attention. The photo has to be in jpeg extension and is much better to do the photo’s rotation in Photoshop before place in Flickr. First step, I began checking all the photos then I unload them into Flickr; second step, I added title and description for each one; and finally, I added the group of photos to an existing file or also I could create a new file. I worked all the day with about 45 photos.

Day Six: September 15th New project

Today I started a brand new project without any example or models. The task was designing a postcard and one of the requirements was including an illustration that they attached in two formats: one in Photoshop and the other as a jpeg image. I used the image in color as a model but the Photoshop file was made as a duotone, difficult to change color on these. After some minutes of analysis I asked for help; Mr. Roger came to recue me. He said that the best and fast way to give color to this work was using the overlay color and the variations in shade in regard to the original was not very important. I worked on it after Mr. Roger’s explanations and I achieved a very acceptable composition. The text was not defined yet and Mr. David was coordinating with the people in charge to get a definition. Meanwhile I finished the front side of the postcard. When Mr. David received the text with the backside information, I began immediately to layout it. There were a few changes that Mr. David asked me after I finished the postcard and when I fixed these I sent the proof for revision.

Day Five: September 11th Checking and defining

The first ad was very simply; it was only made up of text, HCC’s logo and a background in color. In the second one, the information was the same as the before ad; the background disappear and a photo have to be added. I was looking for a good student’s photo in the photo stock; it had to adjust well in my layout. Finally, I decided for one that I liked so I started opening Photoshop to work with the photo. After that I finished both ads, Mr. David checked it out and he suggested me some changes in one of they. I fixed it and carefully I checked both ads before they will be print.

I returned to the tutorials for the rest of my workday. The tutorials help me to refresh my college classes and also learn many tricks.

Day Four: September 10th Practice and real work

Today I continued practicing, my next step was a tri fold. It was simply with more photos than the before brochure but with the difference that it had a chart. The process to make charts is not difficult but it takes some more time because generally the text is took from an email and the typewriter sometimes uses inappropriate characters; he or she used bullets in each line. After that the tri fold was finished Mr. David came to check it; he told me it was very good and now I will start with a different work. He showed me two ads he was made for HCC’s second start; my task will be to design two more ads based in his design so I began to work on it until the time to leave come.

Day Three: September 8th Practicing

Time to practice. I began my workday with an explanation from Mr. David about the use of HCC’s templates in the process of layout. He showed me how to place photos, texts and logos on the template; also he used the paragraph style for standardize the style of design. Then, my turn to practice started, first, from the easiest to the most difficult I started with a flyer. I opened the template, place the logo and photo, and arranged the text. Next, the brochure, I used the same flyer’s process but when I placed the text it was completely messy, so I had to put all in order manually. The experience to work more professional is amazing and in each work I am learning something new.

Day Two: September 4th Training

I arrived very early at office, nobody was there so I checked my email and cleaned my desk. Minutes later, Mr. David Taith and Mr. Curtis entered to the office, I think they were surprised to find me in the office. Mr. David asked me if Mr. Cook has given me an assigment, I said no. He suggested me to continue with the tutorials and then he will give me some exercises about brochure's layout.
I started again with InDesign's tutorials, meanwhile people was arriving to the office. Mr. Conway gave a layout proof in Spanish to check it so I began to read it very carefully. The text was short and no too difficult but it was my first task and I tried to do it very well. I hope I did not make any mistake.
I met a new person, Justin, he is a graphic designer but he works only some days a week. He showed and explained me how he was working in a brochure. He was looking for photos about female metal workers; it was very difficult to find. He also explained me how he received the text, the way to work with photos, and after finish how he convert to pdf the file to send a proof.
Time to go home.

Day One: September 3rd Welcome

My first day began with a friendly welcome from Mr. Conway, my internship's supervisor, he introduced me with the department's people ( HCC Print and Media Department), then we went to the 12nd floor, there we met with the chief of the Communications Department, a very nice person. After that we went to the basement to meet the people of TV Department. We went back to the office and I started to take note about my future tasks. Mr. Roger Cook, Senior Graphic Designer, was my instructor. He explained to me the different kind of worksthat they do and the procedures that they follow to succeed them. We spent many time in activate my student email because it will be a very important tool in the work.

The department chief and my supervisor invited me to have a lunch, as a welcome signal and to know about my goals and my student experiences.

After that in the office, I started a trainning in InDesign. The department has a suscription with a website of tutorials so I received my password and with a confortable headphones I started to watch the first tutorials.
